Services

Neonatal and Infant Circumcision

We provide neonatal and infant circumcision up to approximately 6 weeks of age. With a focus on comfort and compassionate care, we provide a supportive environment for families choosing circumcision for cultural, religious, or personal reasons.

For pregnant patients and parents of newborns and infants who would like more information prior to making a decision regarding circumcision, we provide consultation services. We welcome referrals but they are not required in order for patients to have a pre-circumcision consult.

Brit Milah

A Bris, also known as a Brit Milah, is a traditional Jewish circumcision ceremony performed on newborn boys on the eighth day of life. Please email us if you have questions about this ceremony.

FAQs

No. A referral is not required for a newborn or infant circumcision. Families are able book an appointment directly through our online booking system or by calling the office. While referrals from other healthcare providers (family physicians, pediatricians, obstetricians and midwives) are welcome, they are not required to book an appointment.

Our clinic provides circumcision services to newborns and infants up to approximately 6 weeks of life. However, we highly recommend scheduling the procedure as early as possible as less than 4 weeks of age is ideal. Your baby must also meet a minimum weight requirement of 2.5 kilograms (5.5 pounds) to safely proceed with the circumcision. As soon as your baby is deemed healthy after birth and discharged from hospital, we are happy to book them for circumcision assuming other requirements are met. If your baby was born outside of hospital, please let us know.

Led by a specialist anesthesiologist with additional fellowship training in pediatric anesthesia, our clinic utilizes a multi-layered (multimodal) pain management approach tailored specifically for newborns. This protocol includes:

Oral sucrose (a sugar solution to calm and soothe the baby)

Acetaminophen (a common pain medication that is safe to use in infants)

A targeted local anesthetic injection (nerve block) to numb the area before the procedure begins.

While the typical procedural time for circumcisions in our clinic takes approximately 5 minutes or less, your total appointment time is longer with the goal of achieving high safety and comfort for your baby and his caregivers/parents. The visit will include a thorough consultation (medical history and physical examination), the circumcision procedure itself and a dedicated post-procedure observation period to perform a final wound check and provide you with detailed dressing instructions. A private room will be used for the entire appointment.

To prepare for your baby's appointment, please review the "Requirements & Checks" and "Pre-Procedure Instructions" on our website.

The following are items to keep top of mind:

Ensure your baby meets the age (under ~6 weeks) and weight (minimum 5.5 lbs / 2.5 kg) milestones.

Complete the online registration and review the clinic's Consent Form and Privacy Policy.

Feed your baby normally up to 1 hour prior to arriving at the clinic.

Bring a receiving blanket, wipes and at least 3 diapers to the appointment.

The initial healing phase can take approximately 10-14 days. Some stages of healing take longer and every circumcision follows its own healing timeline with some parts of the healing process requiring a month or longer.

Before you leave the clinic, you will be given comprehensive and easy-to-follow Post-Procedure Instructions outlining how to care for the circumcision site, apply protective dressings with ointment and what to expect as the site fully heals over the subsequent weeks. You will also be given your baby's circumcision physician's cell phone number.
